Top Tips for Using Epoxy Resin for Crafts Like a Pro

Epoxy resin is quickly becoming one of the most popular materials to use for creating various projects, so it only makes sense that you can use it too in the crafting world. Its ease of use, combined with its ability to add sparkly designs and unique finishes, has made it a crowd favorite. You can use epoxy resin to make a wide range of items, including coasters, jewelry, custom trays, and wall art. This allows you to achieve professional-quality results from home. Whether you’re new to working with resin or you’re a pro, these tips will help make sure you get great results every time.

At NorthWood Distributing, we carry all of the supplies you need for your epoxy resin projects. Here’s what you need to know before you play.

1. Choose the Right Epoxy Resin Crafts for Your Project

All resin is not created equal. Based on their formulas, they have varied characteristics including curing time, UV resistance, and thickness. Here at NorthWood Distributing, you'll find the best choices for crafts and projects like:

• Casting Film: Perfect for Flowers, Charms, or Jewelry.

• Seal Resin: Ideal for sealing tumblers, trays, artwork, or any project you want to have. A nice, clear shine.

• Deep Pour Resin: For larger molds, like river tables or deep molds.

2. Prepare Your Workspace

Working with epoxy resin is easy if you set up your space properly. You’ll need a clean, level surface free of dust and pet hair. Small pieces of debris can become trapped in your resin, potentially damaging the finish.

Cover your workspace with disposable plastic or silicone mats to catch drips. Resin is sticky and can harm tables or countertops if you're not careful. Always keep gloves, protective clothing, and disposable cups or stir sticks handy.

Temperature matters, too. Most resins cure best at around 70–75°F (21–24°C). If your space is too cold, the resin may not cure fully or could develop a cloudy finish.

3. Measure Precisely

Measuring accurately is one of the most important steps when working with epoxy resin. Most resins are mixed in a precise ratio—commonly 1:1 by volume. Pour part A (the resin) and part B (the hardener) into separate measuring cups, then combine them in a clean container. Be sure to read the instructions included with your resin carefully. Even a small measuring error can lead to sticky, soft, or improperly cured results.

4. Mix Thoroughly but Gently

After combining your resin and hardener, stir slowly and consistently. Mix the contents well. As you do this, make sure to scrape the sides and bottom of the container. This helps ensure all components blend evenly. Take your time—usually, around 3 to 5 minutes of mixing is needed, depending on the brand. Mixing too quickly can create air bubbles in your finished piece.

5. Eliminate Bubbles

No one likes bubbles in their cured resin. Luckily, you can remove them easily. Once you pour your resin into the mold or onto your project, wait a minute or two to let bubbles rise to the surface.
Then, lightly pass a heat gun or torch over the resin. The heat will pop most of the bubbles instantly. Be careful not to overheat—excess heat can damage molds or create ripples.

6. Use Quality Molds and Supplies

The quality of your molds makes a big difference in your finished projects.
At NorthWood Distributing, we carry a wide range of professional-grade silicone molds designed specifically for resin.
Good molds are flexible enough to release your pieces easily but strong enough to hold their shape pour after pour. Silicone mats, mixing cups, and stir sticks from our resin supplies collection also help keep your process smooth and frustration-free.

7. Add Color and Effects Thoughtfully

The resin looks beautiful and clear, but adding colorants, mica powders, and glitters can take your creations to the next level. If you’re using pigments, start with a small amount and build up gradually.
Too much colorant can affect the curing process or make your resin cloudy. Mix thoroughly to distribute pigments evenly before pouring.

For layered effects, let each layer partially cure before adding the next. This helps you control how colors blend and prevent them from sinking or swirling unintentionally.

8. Allow Plenty of Cure Time

Patience is key when working with epoxy resin.
While some resins may feel firm to the touch after a few hours, most take at least 24 hours to fully cure. Thicker pours or deep-cast projects may need 48–72 hours.
Avoid moving or touching your project during this time.
Cover your work to keep out dust and debris while it cures. If you can, cure your project in a space with steady temperature and low humidity.

9. Sand and Finish Your Piece

Once your resin is fully cured, you may notice sharp edges or small imperfections.
Use fine-grit sandpaper to smooth these areas. If you’re polishing a flat surface, start with 400 grit and work up to 2000 grit or higher for a glass-like shine.
A final coat of resin or a dedicated resin polish can enhance clarity and protect your piece.
Always wear a mask when sanding resin, as the dust can be harmful if inhaled.

10. Store Resin Properly

To keep your supplies in top shape, store resin and hardener in a cool, dry place with the lids tightly closed.
Keep them away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
If stored correctly, most resins have a shelf life of about 12 months. Label your containers with the purchase date so you can track freshness.
